London Wall

This walk can be undertaken as a whole morning or afternoon exploration of the walls which protected the City of London or alternatively as two separate walks.

Part One – Tower Hill to Moorgate:

Starting with some of the most impressive sections of the Roman Wall at Tower Hill and we go on to explore the backstreets of the Minories before visiting the two churches dedicated to St Botolph at Aldgate and Bishopsgate. We will pass England’s oldest working synagogue at Bevis Marks and look at the only church actually built into London Wall with its anchorites. There is also much very impressive modern architecture to be seen including the Gherkin and the Lloyd’s Building. We will end our walk at John Keats birthplace at Moorgate.

Part Two – Moorgate to Blackfriars:

We complete our walk along the ancient walls of London by looking at some of the amazing modern architecture that rose from the ashes left by the Blitz but even amongst these concrete and glass canyons there are many signs of the wall. Passing the Barbican and St Giles Cripplegate we will also look at the moving monuments to heroic individuals in Postman’s Park behind St Botolph without Aldersgate. We will visit the tombs of four medieval queens; shiver by the grim walls of the Old Bailey and pass the site of the playhouse which saw the first performances of several of Shakespeare’s plays before ending our walk at the legendary Arts and Crafts pub at Blackfriars.
